Pte J Heald on Southport war memorial
« on: March 10, 2020, 10:22:00 PM »
Was just looking over the names on Southport war memorial and I've spotted the following unidentified man:

  • Pte J Heald Manchester Regiment

No casualties matching this description on CWGC, a look through the WFA pension records finds two possibilities:

  • Jonathan Heald, 1291 Manchester Regiment, Newton Heath, born 1887, discharged 19 Jun 1917 GSW leg
  • James Heald, 268238 Warwickshire Regiment, Birkdale, born 1888, discharged 13 May 1919 GWS right forearm

Neither looks like a good candidate though, a quick search suggests that Jonathan died at Manchester in 1963 and James at Southport in 1977. Next time I'm in Southport I'll see if there's anything in the newspapers.

Finally had chance to visit Southport Library, unfortunately nothing in the newspaper archives for a J Heald with the Manchesters so still a bit of a mystery.
