2497 Charles,samuel hirst,10 walkers cottages,birstall yorks
Charles had been in action since 15th august 1914,he died of wounds on 1st October 1918,he refused to be stretchered off the field by german prisoners which greatly aggravated his wounds,he was 27yrs old

RQMS 6129 joseph smith.glenmore cottage,fort rd,guernsey
died of wounds in hospital,cardiff
aged 41
MIDs
in soldiers effects there appears in brackets a ref to a DCM,was this from the boer war

I can‘t find a Gazette entry for a DCM only for a MiD which was Gazetted in the same issue as the one for Lt.Col. Elstob. The Gazette entry does not record DCM after his name which would normally be the case if one had previously been awarded.

I agree Charlie,in soldiers effects under his name,it says in brackets DCM,but I cant find it in any campaignes,it must be a error.

 Just a thought, there was a CSM J Smith in the 21st Bn
 thats was awarded the DCM for operations between the
4th to the 11th of October 1918. So is possible that the
records office just mixed them up?

I think the mistaken DCM could have been the cause of the over payment recorded in Soldiers effects. Holders of the DCM were entitled to a gratuity and I assume this would also be taken account of in his war gratuity.
