Neuve Chapelle
« on: November 08, 2019, 11:22:19 AM »
The Battle of Neuve Chapelle 1915 ended with the Indian Corps, including the 1st Manchesters, suffering the following casualties :- 835 killed, 3083 wounded, & 315 missing.    In studying the fighting there I have always been aware of the stoicism displayed by the troops taking part.    I am also aware of the sense of humour that Tommy Atkins brought to the conflict as shown by some graffiti  that Ivor Gurney, the war poet, saw on a barn door in Neuve Chapelle in 1916.

A song at that time had the words "where is my wandering boy tonight?".    Gurney tells us that someone had painted below these words and in large letters "NEUVE CHAPELLE".   PhilipG.
