Title: Roll of Honour
Post by: liverpool annie on November 08, 2007, 08:04:23 PM

I having a bitta trouble  !!  ::)

As you may know ... I've been doing a bit with Gorton Monastery .... their Roll of Honour went missing and we've been trying to put the Roll back together .... apparently there were 128 ( ? ) names on it !!

So I had this brilliant idea to use Geoff's new search engine ......... it spit out 619 names ..........  :P :P :P :P

Any ideas on how to proceed from here ..... most of them are Manchesters ??

Annie  :)

unless you have a list of those who were on st.francis memorial, then the gorton roll of honour is useless.

ime sorry if i seem to be putting a dampener on this, but if you dont know the names of the men listed on the st.francis roll of honour, then you cant compile a roll of honour, you may be doing some of these men an injustice, because they may not be of that faith.
there must have been a record of the memorial service when they dedicated the memorial.
where would it be.

Hi Mack !

I don't know if you have noticed or not .... but I have been looking for the original Honour Roll for months .... and before I said I would try ........ others have been looking too .... and we can't find it !!  :-\

There was also a Book of Remembrance at one time - but that has gone missing too !

I have talked to the people at the Monastery and told them that the list I have now - probably includes a few Protestants .... so that's why I was careful to say that these are men from the "Parish of St Francis " and this is a "re - compiled " Honour Roll ...... maybe I should be a bit more specific !

Manchester Archives has no knowledge ..... it's a possibility that the Brothers took it with them when they left .... but after following their trail .... nothing has been found yet !

I really hoped that we would find the original somewhere ... I even contacted the Vatican .... but even they couldn't find it !  I contacted the Franciscans but they had nothing either !

Have you got any other suggestions Mack ?!

Annie  :)

Thanks Wendi .... I hope you enjoy it .... I have to concentrate on my Priests - at least I know they're right !!  :)

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Not the kind we like .... yet !!  ;D but I'm working on it Wendi !!  ;D

Oh ! .... I also should have mentioned Salford Diocesan Archives and the Leeds Diocesan Archives as the Archivist there wrote a book about Chaplains and just on the "off chance " he might have known something about St Francis - I asked if there was any documentation that he knew of !!

Nada ......... zilch ........ !!

You know Mack .... I understand what you're saying .... but does it really matter if a few of "us" Protestants have snuck in there .... these boys probably all played football together !!

There were a few shrines around Gorton also ... and they have gone missing too ... even John Hartley pounding the streets couldn't find them .... all lost to "progress " ... I know they were there - people remember them .... but they can't be found !

I'd appreciate any other ideas of places to look ....... !!

i do know what your saying me darlin.
5 years ago,i started to compile a roll of all those who died from my home town,i got some stony responses from various church people.
things like.he aint from our church or try somewhere else,i felt like i had done something wronge.
i have noticed that you have gathered togethor those from the parish of st.francis.
ITS a beautiful tribute, and i like the way that you have laid it out.

To be really honest Mack - nobody gives a "rip" anymore - the Monastery isn't a Monastery ... it's a Convention Center  ::)
and apart from a few dedicated people who would like to leave some kind of legacy regarding the Franciscans themselves .... there isn't a whole heck of a lot of enthusiasm !!  ::) whatever is done to try and keep the memory alive of a few men and soldiers who died years ago - will probably not be noticed in the broad scheme of things !!

But just the fact that it's being done .... gives meaning to those men and their time here !

The missing shrines from around Gorton might be in the council yard on Ashton Old Road. There is a lot of storage space, things that have been removed from buildings over the years were stored there.

Well Annie, its a fabulous job you have done. I for one am very impressed. You will also be pleased to hear that I paid my respects on Saturday on yours and the rest of the gangs behalf to one of the men on your Gorton Roll of Honour a Pte W Ryder 43925, KIA 24/04/17.
It pleases me to know that this man has been thought of by us in the last few days by sheer coincidence.  I find that touching.
You are very talented. Where did you get the software I like it very much. Best wishes my friend,

I wasn't sure at first .... being the "dufuss" I am ..... but one of the guys on Roots found that website which is ideal for "dummies " and I'm thrilled at how much easier it was than I thought  :) :) :)

John A .... Thank you for the "heads up " about the council yard on Ashton Old Road ..... how can I get in there or find out what they have .... do you know ??

Hi Annie. just wanted to add that we have quite a few Grave photos on our War Graves link I didn't look at all of them. Cuckoo Passage jumped out with having just been there on Saturday. In fact it was quite a strange experience. I was driving, the sun was glorious and I drove with four of us in the car. Up the dirt track I went. This was unusual to be honest, on the few cemeteries I have been too they have been normal access. I realised as I went further up the track that it was one of about 5 cemeteries around a massive expanse of fields. Well it was the farthest one away. As I got into the copse on the hill. It was so boggy that I got bogged down. I tried to reverse slowly up a slight ramp that led to the cemetery. I got stuck diagonally across the track as the car moved sideways in the mud. The front end was stuck. My poor husbands  face was a picture. I figured I may be joining these poor chaps up the ramp! I left him to it, along with our friend to get us out!! I trotted up the hill and took the photos. Thankfully they got it out. We were all touched by the mud that surounded the small graveyard. I tried to get this on the personal photos of the cemetery. The chaps have their pant legs rolled up.
What those poor men must have gone through. Here we were on a beautiful autumnal day stuck in mud. We knew we would get out some how.
Here I am to prove it.
I found it especially moving at the difficulty we had in the mud. It took ages to get off. The tyres were still full of it back in Calais.
Best wishes
tisgrannie

Hi Tis !

I've been going through the War graves here - and the only one I found so far was one at Gorton Cemetery !!  ::) ::)
I was going to ask if I could use it !

I need to get a few up together before I start putting them up and I'd really love to find some photos of the men ..... I've been going through all kinds of manchester Honour Rolls .... just in case but haven't found any of mine yet !

While the Guardian had their free 24 hours I went through all their newspaper cuttings ...... ( up all night I was !!  ::) )
but just a few snippets that really had nothing to do with my guys !

I really do appreciate your help Tis

Thanks again !

Annie  :)

Use anything you like Annie. Its public property, I took some photos myself. Though not Gorton I am sure the fact they are for a memorial  and you would be very welcome to use them.. We do have small photos of some of the men on our site as well. They are via mack. I do believe that in time he will have provided hundreds, I am sure he would be happy for you to use them.
I have yet to start my 1st Anniversary of the Somme. Probably start over the Christmas break.
Seeing yours makes me think I should let someone else do it.
I look forward to seeing it evolve
best wishes  my friend
