Title: 22087070 Pte & Cpl. G.R. KITLEY
Post by: sphinx on March 19, 2013, 01:18:55 PM
Hello,

Does anyone remember the above chap from 1 Manchesters and later 1 Kings?

Looking at his number he was probably a National Serviceman, enlisting c. 1948.

He served in Malaya and in 1970 Northern Ireland.

regards

Recheck your dates - Malaya 1948 then Northern Ireland 1970 - some National Serviceman  - 22 years.
Cannot see him on my MVA listings.
George,

I remember a L/Cpl G Kitley in Berlin with the Manchester's also the Kings Regiment on amalgamation in 1958,vaguely remembered in Kenya and also in Ballykinler N Ireland,if I remember correctly L/Cpl Kitley was employed in the QMs Department,if it is the same Cpl Kitley he was married and occupied married quarters in the last tour of Berlin and again in N Ireland, when I left N Ireland L/Cpl Kitley was still serving with the Kings Regiment in 1968

Thanks Arty,

Unusual surname so I am sure its the same chap.

He actually got the General Service Medal 1962 with clasp "Northern Ireland" which is quite an achievment for an old Manchesters Malaya soldier.

Interestingly his rank on his Malaya medal is Cpl. and on his later N. Ireland medal is Pte. so he must have been busted down for something and didnt get a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal!

regards

Hi there Roy Sphinx and Arty,
Did some thinking last night and knew the name, being somewhat unusual, came familiar but - then suddenly yes - he must have signed on either in Berlin or at Saighton Barracks Chester - he workd along with Cpl Harry Hamilton who later around December 1954 came to me as Barrack Accomodation Storeman at Wavell Barracks; I think he went off to Sgt 'Taff' Hughes on Rations Store or somewhere with Cook Sgt. Charlie Watson.
The old memory played me up for a while there Sphinx  but eventually cottened on - yes there are a few of the Malayan crowd who also got the Northern Ireland  Clasp including yourself there Roy - did'nt you?
I left after the Amalgamation and finished my last few months at Preston with Polly Perkins.
George.

If it helps jog any memories, I now believe he was called George with two middle names beginning with 'R'.

He married Alice Jackson in 1954 at Ashton, presumably whilst stationed at Ladysmith Barracks.

Hi George,Sphink and Grimmy,I too like you George have sudden flashbacks,I think my name is on Cpl Kitleys conduct sheet,George Kitley and his wife Alice were fond of the amber nectar and were known to over indulge,I do remember that L/Cpl Kitley was a well turned out NCO,unfortunately I think his social life was his downfall.

Arty,

That would probably explain his reduction in rank from Corporal and the lack of a LS&GC Medal.

thankyou.
