pte claude brown was reported missing on 9th july 1916,after extensive enquiries by his father,he recieved a letter from chaplain telfer of the 14th division.
dear mr brown
i found the body of a young soldier today,he had on him letters addressed from you,it appears from the paybook in his pocket,that hes your son,i have forwarded the paybook to his unit,we buried him and erected a cross with his full correct name+initials.
on 28-9-1921 his father was informed that his body was exhumed from his battlefield grave and re-interred in bernafay wood british cemetery,montauban.

I saw a note on a photo of Trones wood today that said the bodies of the Manchesters who fell in July were not recovered until November. It's quite daunting to think of the work the chaplain did to identify Claude.
