The battalion history has the following entry concerning this Warrant Officer relating to the award to him of the Distinguished Conduct Medal : -
"Gallant and consistent good work, 23 Feb - 27 Sept, 1918, Of enormous value to his CO., 1 Jan. 1919, 3 Sept.1919." Is anything further known about this soldier ?

Sadly, the attempt at brevity in this case, including wrong dates, I suppose must be accepted, but it is no substitute for the contents of the citation itself. These I think, paint an entirely different word picture from that implied in the battalion's Decorations & Honours Rolls. CSM Newman was killed on the 1st October 1918 at Joncourt. He has no known grave and his name is therefore recorded on Panel 9 of the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
I take it that the comment "of enormous value to his CO" emanates from Lt.Col. G.M. Robertson ?

many of the manchester battalions histories contain errors, the date of 3rd sept 1919 was the gazette date for his DCM

Most disquieting. Philip G.

Would I be correct in assuming that the reference "1 Jan. 1919" has a connection with the date of approval of the award/advice of the DCM ? PhilipG.

His DCM was Gazetted on 1st Jan 1919
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31092/supplement/43
but the citation was published in the issue for 3rd Sept 1919
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31534/supplement/11145
There is nothing unusual in this.
