The Regular Battalions

The Regular Army, The Professional Soldiers, 1st and 2nd Battalions ( also 3rd and 4th)

The First Line Territorial Battalions

5th, 6th. 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th Battalions, The Territorial Force, later the Territorial Army, formed from the Volunteer Battalions. Part time soldiers in peace time, front line soldiers in war time

The Second Line Territorial Battalions

2/5th, 2/6th, 2/7th, 2/8th, 2/9th & 2/10th Battalions. Created when the first line territorials went abroad to fight, these battalions first trained and fed drafts to the terriers abroad and then later went to war themselves

The Third Line Territorial Battalions

3/5th, 3/6th, 3/7th, 3/8th, 3/10th Battalions. Created when the second line battalions went abroad

K1 K2 K3 The First of Kitcheners New Armies

11th, 12th and 13th Battalions. The first battalions created in response to Kitchners need for men to fight the war in 1914

The 'Pals' Battalions

16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th Battalions. The City Battalions raised by the Mayor and Industrialists of the City of Manchester from the clerks and warehousemen of the city.
